ABOUT DR. ZENIA P. AGUILERA
Dr. Zenia Aguilera is a highly honored pediatric ophthalmologist. With a patient load of over 5,000 patients per year at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, she had a month’s long waiting list for non-critical patients and was frustrated at not being able to provide continuity of care, as well as care to adults instead of just children. She decided to leave the hospital system and go into private practice in order to provide the personalized care she knows her patients need.
Dr. Aguilera has over 25 years experience helping from newborns to seniors with surgical conditions such as a lazy eye, droopy eyelids or cataracts, as well as providing relief from chronic conditions such as dry eye, glaucoma and vision issues caused by diabetes. She is double board certified in Ophthalmology and Pediatrics.
In addition to her private practice and work at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital where she maintains her surgical privileges, Dr. Aguilera also works as a voluntary pediatric ophthalmology clinical assistant professor at Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine.
Dr. Aguilera earned her medical degree with a “Golden Seal Award” for academic achievement from the Higher Institute of Medical Service in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba. She later completed a residency in ophthalmology with honors at the same institution. Dr. Aguilera served as an instructor professor in pediatric ophthalmology at Juan M. Marquez Pediatric Hospital in Havana before moving to the U.S. She then completed her residency and a pediatric residency in ophthalmology at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York; followed by a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh/University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). Her clinical interests include cataract surgery, strabismus surgery and amblyopia treatment.
Dr. Aguilera is board certified in general pediatrics and ophthalmology. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS), and the Florida Society of Ophthalmology (FOS). Her work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and she has presented at both national and international conferences.
Dr. Aguilera is bilingual in English and Spanish.
